Huddersfield Town Squad Depth 2021/22 analysed

04/08/21

Town are approaching their third season in the Championship after relegation from the Premier League, with it being the first summer where there were no more Premier League transfer fee/ wage obligations. It was a reset, 16 players in the first-team squad were out of contract at the end of last year. Town had a chance to totally clear out their squad if they wanted to.
Town have so far signed Lee Nicholls, Josh Ruffels, Ollie Turton, Levi Colwill, Jordan Rhodes, Matty Pearson, Tom Lees and Danel Sinani, while Town have only loaned out Kieran Phillips and Rarmani Edmonds-Green.
So what does Town's squad depth look like? and do they need to strengthen any further?

Midfielders

Arguably Town is worse off in this area compared to last year. Carel Eiting will not be returning to Town this season after signing for Genk on a permanent deal from Ajax. When Eiting was on the field, Town had a positive goal difference (26 goals for, 24 goals against). It is expected that Lewis O'Brien will leave and I don't think it needs to be mentioned how much of a miss he is going to be. Added the expected departure of Juninho Bacuna, Town will only have Jonathan Hogg who played more than 1500 minutes in midfield for Town last season at the club this season. Scott High is expected to break through while Alex Vallejo is still an option.
I don't think it should be understated the impact of Bacuna's probable departure. For the past two seasons, he has been the clubs highest scoring and assisting midfielder. He can be called lazy and selfish, but he is one of the only players in the squad that can still produce a moment of magic to win you the game after being anonymous all game.
The return of Reece Brown and the emergence of Scott High do help to boost the depth of the midfield and while Danel Sinani has been signed as a creative number 10. Duane Holmes could operate in the midfield, but I am not overly keen on him playing in the middle. Town then have players such as Matty Daly, Jon Russell and Brahima Diarra in the B team, but Daly doesn't seem to be in Carlos' plans, Russell will originally be with the B team and Diarra is still young. If Town does not improve the midfield, this season will be another struggle.
Town really need to get some quality through the door here, another creative player and another box to box signed to be competitive. If they don't, then I think they have failed in the transfer market this summer, especially considering their forwards rely on chances being created for them.
