Huddersfield Town Squad Depth 2021/22 analysed

04/08/21

Town are approaching their third season in the Championship after relegation from the Premier League, with it being the first summer where there were no more Premier League transfer fee/ wage obligations. It was a reset, 16 players in the first-team squad were out of contract at the end of last year. Town had a chance to totally clear out their squad if they wanted to.
Town have so far signed Lee Nicholls, Josh Ruffels, Ollie Turton, Levi Colwill, Jordan Rhodes, Matty Pearson, Tom Lees and Danel Sinani, while Town have only loaned out Kieran Phillips and Rarmani Edmonds-Green.
So what does Town's squad depth look like? and do they need to strengthen their squad any further?

Goalkeepers

Lee Nicholls and Ryan Schofield are two good options in goal, they both should be competiting against each other for the starting spot. Schofield who played the majority of games towards the backend of last season so has knowledge of this level. Having a player with the experience of Lee Nicholls is a really solid alternative, this is something that couldn't be said for Town's keeping options in the second half of last season. Giosue Bellagambi is listed as the third 'keeper in the Town First Team squad while Jacob Chapman has been sent out on loan to Gateshead.
Town may have had the worst defensive record in the division last season, conceding 71 goals - 2 more than Wycombe. There is clearly a blame on the goalkeepers for that, but the defence in front of Ryan was no where near blameless, for the experience and the amount of money they were on. Town strengthening the defence should take some pressure off the goalkeepers, which should indirectly improve this position.
Lee Nicholls kept a clean sheet and saved two penalties in the cup game against Sheffield Wednesday and had a very good game. As a result, it will most likely be that Nicholls starts against Derby County this weekend, but the metaphorical 'number 1' will probably be switched between Ryan and Lee throughout the season and most likely on a game to game basis, which should give Carlos a tactical advantage.
