Mipo Odubeko Scouting Report

31/08/2021

Town have secured their 9th signing of the summer and their third loan signing of the season with the Ireland youth international Mipo Odebeko from West Ham.
Born in Dublin, Odebeko moved to England in 2015 as he signed for Manchester City, before making the move across Manchester to Old Trafford. Although he has played for Ireland u21s, Mipo is also eligible to play for Nigeria and England. Odebeko rejected a pro contract at United and instead chose to sign for West Ham, where he has been ever since. Before joining Town on a season long loan, Mipo extended his current contract by a further year until 2023. Odebeko has played twice for the Hammers first team in the FA Cup last season and once in the EFL Trophy for the u23s, where he bagged a brace.

How would he be described?

Prolific is the word that I would use to describe Town's new number 7, 24 goals scored and 4 assists in 20 youth team games for West Ham. He clearly knows where the back of the net is and can shoot on either foot. His two goals against Southend in the EFL Trophy were rockets, both from outside the box, one on his left and one on his right. His preferred foot is his right, but his left is equally as good, a bit like Aaron Rowe in that respect.
Odubeko is a pacey strong striker, who will be competing for a starting spot at Town. At 6ft, he is certainly going to be a threat in the air. He can create goal-scoring chances out of nothing and is happy to run with the ball if he needs to.

Social Media Reaction

The best way of engaging how good a signing is to look at the reaction of the fans of the club where the player has come from. West Ham fans are either furious that he has been let go as they are now left with only Antonio as a striker in the squad or they are delighted that he is able to continue his development as the Hammers have very high hopes for him.

The Verdict

With Jordan Rhodes out for 3 months, Town need another striker, as it would leave Town with only Danny Ward and Fraizer Campbell as the senior strikers. Kian Harratt could be used as a last resort, but is not anywhere near Championship standard yet at only 19. Odebeko solves two problems Town have, he adds depth in attack and adds pace. Town has Josh Koroma, but he is better on the wing or as part of a front two. Mipo solely plays as a striker, as a single striker or as part of a two.
I am really excited by this signing, it is really low risk, if it doesn't work out, Town and West Ham have the option to break the loan in January. He is something different to what we already have and judging by the way we have picked Premier League loans up in the past, he will be a of a top quality.
