Levi Colwill, What to Expect

24/06/2021

Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Huddersfield Town will be signing 18 year old Chelsea starlet Levi Colwill. The left footed centre back is set to sign a 4-year deal at Chelsea before joining Town on loan for the season.
Colwill is set to follow in fellow Chelsea teammate Marc Guehi's footsteps who spent last season on loan at Swansea from Chelsea and most recently in Town's case: Trevoh Chalobah. Fan's rightly will question why Town are signing such a young centre back on loan when we have Romoney Crichlow and Rarmani Edmonds-Green already at the club, but it would appear the club are wanting to loan out one of the two and I would think that would be Crichlow, so Town need cover as a result.

His Career so far

Even though Colwill has just turned 18, he has still experienced a top-class football education and is seen as one of the most exciting youngsters coming through the European Champion's academy. He was drafted in as cover for the Chelsea first team at the back end of last season as a result of Andreas Christensen being injured. Levi played 18 times for the Blues in the Premier League 2, scoring once. He has also played 20 times in the U18s Premier League and played in the UEFA Youth League and EFL Trophy - which is against League 1 and 2 sides.

What to expect

Town are getting a left-footed centre back, who is a tall and powerful defender. Levi is 1.87m tall, so will add height into the defensive line, while also adding quality on the ball as he is comfortable to press forward with the ball at his feet. He is also versatile, played primarily as a centre back on the left, or he can play as a left-back or wing back.

No announcement from either club, so how is it confirmed?

Fabrizio Romano is a highly talented and respected Italian Journalist, who knows the inside of the European transfer market. He very rarely if not ever gets a transfer wrong and he would probably be regarded as the most reliable football journalist in Europe at the moment, so it would be highly surprising if this deal did not go through.

The Verdict

I question his age, but as we have all seen with Jude Bellingham this summer for England, if you are good enough, you are old enough. Importantly in Town's case, I think he frees up Romoney Crichlow to go out on loan for a season to a League 1/2 side and get him some much-needed experience.
It is a risk to play such a young defender in the Championship, but he is coming from one of the best academies in the country and for all the stick the Town recruitment team gets, they rarely get a Premier League loan wrong. Smith-Rowe, Chalobah, Chilwell, Palmer and Brown have all come to Town and done well, so I don't see why Colwill will be any different.
My opinion on him is, he looks like a really exciting player and while I don't expect him to start every week, he should bring good competition and athleticism to the defence. Good signing.
